The church at vatnsfjörður is a small curious church. It sits adjacent to the site of some archaeological excations of ruins dating back the viking era and which figure significantly into Grettir´s Saga. The curious thing about the church is that it faces north towards the mountainside, giving a sense to passersby that it has no entry, though indeed it does. Atop the mountain that it faces is located the cairn Grettisvarða, which was supposedly built by Grettir. Another curious feature of the area are the two mock canons at the flagpole by the farm adjacent to the church, not a common site in Iceland. The church dates to 1913, and the shed near the water (visible in the last photograph) from the 19th century.
